39 Miles Down - 161 Left to Go

Seatoller to Grasmere

We must have left our Trail Legs in the US, because after two long days of carrying our full backpacks, we decided have someone else to carry them. Yes, we‘re paying someone to drive our backpacks from village to village across Northern England. Despite our egos, we felt like we were walking on air today!

If we had to sum up today in a single picture, we’d rely on weather.com…

We hiked through an area that gets 196 inches (nearly 5 meters) of rain a year.

It was very wet and boggy, but we had our rain gear (and a driver had our heavy packs), so it wasn’t terrible. Even with the wet rocks and mud, we didn’t suffer major slips, slides or falls today.

Our hike was through the gorgeous Cumbrian countryside. Another very steep climb (just like yesterdays stone staircase), but our descent was a few miles shorter.

The trail from Seatoller to Grasmere

We passed through some idyllic English villages that are centuries old. With a little imagination you could see a horse drawn cart heading down the rock path, or men building rock walls to keep their sheep contained. The moss-covered rock walls still stand.

We passed some unbelievable gardens today…

We’re staying at a youth hostel in Grasmere with a rich history. Built in the 1800’s, it served as a hospital through several wars and eventually ended up as a hostel. We found it to be a wonderful place to spend the night!

Know when to hold them; know when to fold them; know when to drop the bags; know when to grin!
