Day 6 on the Elbe Cycle Route

Our hosts last night in Dolni Berkovice were a delightful older couple, with their daughter stepping in as interpreter. Such a lovely family and a perfect place to stay!

Six days - it’s going by way too fast!

Today’s route kept us on asphalt the entire way—such a treat after those bone-jarring stretches along bumpy river trails earlier this week. And the weather cooperated beautifully. We’d been bracing for rain yesterday and today, but it came through overnight and cleared before we hit the trail. Perfect timing!

Unexpected detour! We stumbled upon the European Rowing Championships for athletes under 23. The arena was an old quarry turned world-class rowing facility. Watching those young athletes glide across the water was really something special.

Maybe it’s the weekend, maybe it’s the sunshine—but everyone we met today seemed especially cheerful. The hospitality along the trail today has been wonderful, with lots of friendly “Dobrý den” and “Ahoy” greetings along the way.

In Roudnice nad Labem, we struck gold: a lively beer and food festival in the city center. Shade, live traditional Czech music, cold drinks, and great food—it checked all the boxes AND it was lunchtime!

We really enjoyed the folk music!
This afternoon we explored Terezín, a walled fortress built in the 18th century to defend Bohemia from Prussia. Its darker history is as a Jewish ghetto and Nazi concentration camp during WWII, primarily for Czech Jews.

Today Terazín is an extensive museum that highlights how inmates coped with life in the ghetto. The Nazis even staged Terezín as propaganda to convince the Red Cross that conditions were humane. It was a chilling reminder of the atrocities this area faced.

Tonight we’re staying in Litoměřice, just across the river from Terezín. Dinner was at a bustling beer garden in our neighborhood—energetic, lively, and the perfect way to end a very full day!

We only have one more full day in the Czech Republic before we cross into Germany.

That’s all for now! Čau Čau!
