Day 7 on the Elbe Cycle Route

Our 35-mile day from Litoměřice to Děčín was another pleasant day —plenty of sunshine, a varied trail (with some very large cobbles and gravel early on), and lots of day-bikers out enjoying the path.

One highlight was hearing Mozart from the trail. We stopped and found that it was coming from an open church. The very talented pianist was in the choir loft, so we never actually got to see who was play - but it was magical.

Later, we stopped at the extremely bike-friendly Koko Café for coffee (and beer).

We navigated around a dam and spared ourselves having to take several flights of stairs with our bikes. That made us very happy.

The trail then carried us past a striking bridge, which we later learned was a single cantilevered spar-stayed cable bridge—when you get 3 engineers together, this is the sort of thing we like to focus on.

We paused for lunch at another beer garden. The menu looked impressive until we discovered that half of it wasn’t available. No worries—they still had sausage and schnitzel, and that was enough to satisfy us.

By early afternoon we rolled into Děčín, where live music filled the trail. We stopped to enjoy for a few songs.

From our vantage point across the river, we had an amazing view of a lookout tower perched atop dramatic cliffs. Only after staring a bit did we realize that rock climbers were making their way up those sheer faces.

After running a few errands—including a pharmacy stop for antihistamines to ease itchy bee stings Elise and I had picked up a few days ago—we made the final climb to our hotel.

End-of-day climbs aren’t exactly our favorite, but this one led us into a quieter, elevated part of town and rewarded us with a great spot for the night.

Happy to call it a wrap!

Our lodging is in a historic building that once belonged to a monastery, right next to a Gothic Revival chapel. This is the view from our window!

Dinner was at the hotel restaurant, where Elise and I finally tried the roasted pork knuckle we’ve been seeing on menus since arriving in the Czech Republic, while Bob went for duck legs. Everyone was very pleased with their choices!

Tomorrow promises a longer ride with some sightseeing stops along the way—plus a milestone: crossing the border into Germany.

We’re looking forward to sharing tomorrow’s adventure!
